Oncologists from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi throw light on recent developments in cancer treatment at a CME organized in Amritsar
Amritsar, July 20, 2019: A CME (Continuing Medical Education) program on recent developments in cancer treatment was organized today by renowned doctors from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi for the doctors in Amritsar. The CME was conducted by Dr. Dipanjan Panda, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncologist and Dr. Robin Khosa, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncologist who elaborated on the latest advancements in oncology. The day long program witnessed an enthusiastic participation from doctors across Amritsar. Dr. Panda and Dr. Khosa shared information on the latest technological developments in regards to cancer therapy and treatment. They also elaborated on the rising incidence of cancer and what should be done to curb the rising cases.
Dr. Panda said, “Cancer is one of the most common non-communicable diseases and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the state today. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the incidence of cancer in Punjab is 100-110 cases for every 1,00,000 individuals, the highest in any Indian state. What is most crucial is timely diagnosis which is possible through routine screening for cancer, since prevention is the best cure for any disease. Early cancer diagnosis significantly increases the chances of survival.”
Dr. Khosa explained the difficulty in the diagnosis of normal cell v/s cancer cell, as in the early stages, the cancer cells exhibit properties of a normal cell. He spoke on new diagnostic methods available in addition to biopsy and radiography that help to determine the stage of cancer and survivability of the patients.
The CME also touched upon the latest developments in cancer treatment including the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre which opens a new frontier in cancer care with patients advanced multi-room proton therapy with cutting-edge pencil-beam scanning technology that provides the highest degree of precision. They explained the clinical advantages of proton therapy, which has seen more than 200,000 patients successfully treated worldwide, over conventional radiation therapy. Proton beam therapy takes the fight to cancer with increased precision and greater dose delivery at the precise site of the cancer, minimizing damage to healthy tissue, better quality of life and a higher cure rate. This ultimately leads to better recovery with negligible side effects. Topics such as cancer immunology, inhibited cancer growth, role of radiology in diagnosis and minimally invasive surgery were also discussed.
