International lecture Series on the 551st Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Amritsar, June 24, 2020 ( ) – The Department of History and Centre On Studies in Sri Guru Granth Sahib of Guru Nanak Dev University has started International History lecture Series (online) on the 551st Parkash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu.
Under this series, Prof Gurinder Singh Mann, a scholar of Sikh Studies delivered the first lecture ‘Baba Nanak and Bhagti Lehar’. Prof. Mann is a former Professor of University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. Presently, he is based in New York and is the Director of Global Institute of Sikh Studies. He is an alumni of the first batch of Guru Nanak Dev University. Prof. Mann’s basic argument was that we should keep Guru Nanak out of Sant Tradition. We can better understand him if we see how he viewed himself. Guru called himself a poet, a bard, who sang in the praise of the Supreme Lord. He strongly denounced asceticism and advocated the life of the householder.
The second lecture of this series was delivered by a Pakistan based anthropologist Harun Khalid, a travel writer and freelance journalist. Harun Khalid has been working on religious minorities in Pakistan. He is the author of “Walking with Nanak” and spoke on Baba Nanak’s Legacy in Pakistan. He said that Baba Nanak and his message is Universal and he should not be seen as the Guru of Sikhs only. The people who worship Baba Nanak in Pakistan have their own way of doing it.
The Head of the Department of History, Prof. Amandeep Bal introduced and welcomed the speakers and Prof. Amarjit Singh , Director of the Centre On Studies in Sri Guru Granth Sahib thanked the guests. Dr. Harneet Kaur, Assistant Professor managed the question answer session.
