Guru Nanak Dev University organized online workshop to improve Research productivity

Amritsar 21 May 2020: Empowering Academicians in Web of Science and End Note for improving Research Productivity, an online workshop was organised by the School of Education of the Guru  Nanak Dev University.  As many as 2000 participants from diverse background of studies ranging from sciences, engineering, social sciences and languages from IITs, BITS, IISER, ICMR, Central and state goverment universities and higher education institutions from almost all states and UTs of the country participated in the programme of 6 hrs continuous duration. For this purpose CISCO WEBEX software platform was used.

 Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu in his inaugural message elucidated on the importance of research and its publication for NIRF and assessment in world ranking. Research opens the door to millions of unsolved  problems and facilitates, discoveries and inventions he added. Prof. Sandhu said that the growth of any educational institution and the civilisation is proportional to the quantum of quality research.  Lockdown period is being utilized judiciously by  the academicians to enhance their professional growth and get them familiarized with the use of technology in research methodology through the online workshops, especially structured for them. He also congratulated the team of school of education to take these initiatives.

Prof Amit Kauts, Project Coordinator, School of Education extended a warm welcome to the participants and introduced them with the content of the workshop and its significance to the researchers. He stressed on the use of Web tools by the present genre of researchers to access, organise and create the research outcomes. These tools  have become ubiquitous and have the ability to ease the research  process and to enhance resource-development for otherwise complex process of research. He said now is the opportune time for the faculty and researchers to adapt to  the benefits of  artificial intelligence, available through the competent softwares.

Prof (Dr) Saroj Arora, Department of Botanical Sciences of the University and  Dr. Virendra Nagpal, Professor, in Geography, S.N.D.T.  Women’s University, Pune Campus.  Vishav Sharma who is a Senior Solutions Consultant at Clarivate Analytics was the key resource person.

Managing references and find the most suitable journals to publish in, with ‘EndNote’ along with  Hands on practice of ‘EndNote’ were some of the highlights  characteristics of the presentation by the experts.

The workshop covered series of sessions, including Q/A Sessions, surveys and live demonstrations for the smooth conduct of the programme. The basic contents of the workshop included For Web of Science:  Citation analysis and reports, h-Index of authors & institutions;  Analysis of search results to find Top authors, journals, institutions, publications etc.; Research output and impact on overall h-Index;  Impact Factor and its significance in research; Various search methods and refine search options;  Tools available for disambiguation of authors and institutions; Analyze and find the co-authors, access collaborations and find suitable funding agencies based on research area.

                For EndNote:  Various methods of building a library in EndNote;  Ways of finding the best-fit /most suitable journal for a manuscript ready for publishing; Creating various types of Groups and assigning/sharing references;  Adding annotations/notes and highlighting in full-text; Writing citations & references using the ‘Cite-while-you-write’ feature;

 Dr. Jaspreet Singh, Professor, Department of Computer Science, Dr.Tejwant Singh Kang from Department of Chemistry, Dr Rawal Singh Aulakh from department of Physical Planning and Architecture from the university were participant coordinators who raised the queries of approximately 2000 participants with the experts and extended their support for the success of the programme.

                In the valedictory session, Dr Deepa sikand thanked the organizers and congratulated them as the workshop got an overwhelming response from all over India. She was  of the view that there is dearth of such training programmes which provided hands on experience.

 The workshop concluded with some  reflections on the success and benefit of today’s workshop by Prof (Dr) Saroj Arora, Department of Botanical Sciences, GNDU, Amritsar and  Dr. Virendra  Nagarale, Professor of Geography, S.N.D.T.  Women’s University, Pune campus. Dr. Deepa Sikand Kauts, Head, Department of Education,  thanked  Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu , Guru Nanak Dev University,Amritsar, Prof Sarabjot Singh Behl, Dean Academic Affairs, Mr vishav sharma from Clarivate analytics, Prof Amit Kauts, Project  coordinator along with team of SOE for the conduct of the online workshop. She congratulated the participants for the interest and thirst in the present workshop. She concluded with a note that the content of the workshop would go a long way in the conduct of quality research.
