Amritsar, December 02: The department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University organized an academic lecture on “Oxidative/Nitrosative stresses and heart failure “ here today in the seminar hall. A large number of researchers and faculty participated.
Prof. Pawan K. Singhal, Professor, Naranjan Dhalla Chair, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada delivered this lecture. Noted film actor, director and story writer Deepa Sahi was the guest of honour on this occasion.
Prof. Singhal emphasized that an imbalance of oxidative stressors and anti-oxidative mechanisms contributes to cardiac damage. He explained the role of oxidative and nitrosative stress by taking the example of the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin, which is highly effective in anti-cancer therapy but is also known to cause cardiac damage by generation of oxidative stress which is the major dose limiting side effect of this medication. He said that their lab was involved in studying the effectiveness of vitamin C to reduce doxorubicin induced heart failure.
Dr Rajbir Bhatti, Pharmaceutical Sciences coordinated the event and Dr. M.S. Bhatti, Head of Department introduced the speaker, Prof. Renu Bhardwaj gave the presidential address and Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal presented the vote of thanks. Prof. Singhal and Ms. Deepa Sahi, actor cum writer were honored by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu with coffee table book and mementos.
