Syndicate Meeting held at Guru Nanak Dev University

Amritsar, November 28: The Syndicate meeting of the Guru Nanak Dev University was held here today in the Syndicate Room of the University.  Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor presided over the meeting while Prof. K.S Kahlon, Registrar presented the agenda. Prof. S.S. Behl, Dean Academic Affairs and a large number of members of Syndicate were present to discuss various issues. Approval to new appointments, change in the name of courses & colleges, re-appointments , study leave etc. were the main agenda in the meeting.  As many as 13 Ph.D degrees were also approved in this meeting.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Sandhu informed the members about the development of the University. He said that recently University celebrated its 50th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm, organized IK NOOR: Interfaith Confluence to mark the 550th Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. He said that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, has allotted four Centres of Excellence in Sports to Guru Nanak Dev University in the specialities of Athletics, Fencing, Cycling and Swimming. The Centres would be fully funded by Government of India which will identify young and talented sportspersons of nearby schools. He  said that Symphony of Traditional Music of all Religions will be setup in the University and an auditorium for this purpose is under construction.

Syndicate accorded its approval to award of Honoris Causa Degrees at forth coming 46th Annual Convocation of the University to be held shortly. During this Convocation, the degree of Doctor of Medicine – In the Faculty of Medical Sciences will be awarded to Dr. Naresh Trehan (Surgeon), Chairman & Managing Director, Medanta Heart Institute and degree of Doctor of Philosophy – In the Faculty of Visual Arts & Performing Arts to Sh. Pankaj Kapur, Actor, Story writer, Screenwriter, Director of Indian Theatre.

In an another decision, University will frame policy for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in the University with the objective to foster, stimulate and encourage creative activities in the widest sense in the areas of Technology, Science, Arts and Management. Through this, the inventions and discoveries made in the course of University research amy be made readily available to the public through channels of commerce. This will be done keeping in view the services rendered by various departments of the University in various fields.

From next academic session, the students of 5th & 7th semester of Computer Science and Engineering alongwith their regular teachers from Regional Campus Sathiala will be shifted to main campus but the short term technical courses will be operational and more such courses  will be added shortly. According to Syndicate decision, the Univesity will start Diploma Course in Persian (Part Time) from the next academic session. The University will provide more concessions for the wards of the Kashmiri Migrants and Kashmiri Pandit/Kashmiri Hindu Families (non-Migrants) living in Kashmir Valley for admission in Higher Educational Insitutions during the academic session 2020-21.

In a decision, Guru Nanak Dev University will preserve the legacy of eminent novelist, Sardar Nanak Singh Ji in the separate room or space within the Bhai Gurdas Library in form of the small museum which will house his original handwritten manuscripts, his correspondence with important literary personalities, historic photographs, wards received by him and artefacts of personal use.   

The Synicate also accorded its approval to appointment of Dr. Paramjit Singh, Scientist-G and former Director, Botanical Survey of India as “Professor of Eminence” in the University. The decision regarding the appointments on the basis of companssionate ground in the University has been approved alongwith approval to appointement of Consultant (Project Management) for faciliatating the administration of projects under Component-4 of RUSA 2.0.

Prof. Sandhu thanked the syndics and exhorted all to play pro-active role in further progress of the University. The members of the Syndicate congratulated the Vice Chancellor and others for the overall development of the University.
